Vision & Prediction of Shri Akkammadevi on Galiyar Elders
Go to Top
After a few generations, three sons were born to the CoupleGaliyarKrishnaswamy Naidu and Ammuluammal. Among the three sons, the eldest Govindarajugot married and was not gifted witha child for many years. Later on, a female baby was born with the blessings of their clan Deity. Though they wished to have the maiden tonsure as an offering to the clan of Galiyar Kula Devi, in their clan’s temple, they could not fulfill their wish, as there was no temple for their Deity. When they asked for suggestion to some elders of Galiyar clan, they said to keep two kalasams at home, perform pooja, and make pampayansto narrate the story of their Deity, keep pongal and enshrine it with new clothes and pray her. They also said that the baby’s maiden tonsure would be their sincere dedication.
To execute the ceremony, AnuppapattiGaliyarKrishnaswamy Naidu went to the nearby Galiyar elders and said “We are going to perform the maiden tonsure as an offering to the clan of our Galiyar Kula Devi for our grand- daughter. Pambaikkaran will read the story of our Deity. Hence I invite you all to join the ceremony”. Then the Galiyar elders went to Varatharajapuram, to attend GaliyarKrishnaswamy’s grand- daughter’s maiden tonsure and the poojas which were proposed to be held there.
After the pooja, the pampaikaraRaman read the story of Shri Akkammadevi and invoked the Goddess’s Sakthi. The Deity Shri Akkammadevi took abode of Krishnaswamy Naidu and said “I am much pleased as the elders of Galiyar clan worship me united after such a long time. The elders of my clan are very eager to build a temple to me. Though they worship me in their respective house, I dwell only in Sengaipadhi! So, you come to Thevar’s house in Sengalipalayam on 18thAdipperukku, perform poojas, open the temple, and take all the pooja things that are kept in Thangaraippetti for many generations, clean them and worship by keeping pongal. Later on I will tell my history in detail. I will also help you in building the temple” and then left.

Simultaneously some other eminent Galiyar elders assembled in Ranganayaki ammal’s house in Anuppa patti near Palladam in Tirupur district to discuss the matter of building a Temple to their clan Deity Shri Akkammadevi. They said, “There are temples to the Deities of all the clans. So, we also must build a temple for our clan Deity. Then only the hardships of all Galiyar clan will come to an end. Our families will prosper”. Thus they discussed about the importance of building up of the temple for Shri Akkammadevi.
During the discussion some Galiyar elders said that the temple should be built in Anuppa patti. But, some other elders told that it should be built only in Sengalipalayam. Whereas some of them argued to build Thevar temple in Sengalipalayam and Shri Akkammadevi temple in Anuppa patti. So, the decision was inconclusive.
The meeting led to no fruits and the decision of building the temple was in stalemate for another ten years. Then Singanallur Galiyar Chinnasamy Naidu’s fourth son Gopalakrishnan took continuous steps and put his continuous efforts to build the temple by collecting donations from all the Galiyar families who lived in and around Coimbatore district. He got timely support from many of the Galiyar families, especially from Rangasamy Naidu’s family of Rajalakshmi mills. By that time many of the Galiyar clan people showed interest to build the Temple in Sengalipalayam Thevar house. But the collected funds were insufficient to build the temple.
Efforts Taken To Open the Ruined Temple
Go to TopAs per the Prediction of Shri Akkammadevi, the families of Singanallur, GaliyarChinnasamy Naidu,GaliyarKrishnaswamy Naidu from Anuppa patty with some other Galiyar clan elders went to SengalipalayamThevar’s house on 3rd of August – the Aadi 18th festival. The Galiyar,Thevar house Ramaswamy Naidu heard about the news, handed over the key of the house which was locked for many years and said, “There is a cobra in Thevar’s house and the families that involve in temple’s Thiruppani have never come up. So, no one ventured to go there; you don’t put yourselves into trouble”.
By neglecting his statements,GaliyarChinnaswamy Naiduhad taken steps to open the temple gate for performing poojas and prayers. After praying all the Gods and Goddesses, he, with the blessings of Shri Akkammadevi, opened the temple gate which was kept closed for many generationswith the help of many Galiyar people. After opening the gate, they saw a Thangaraippetti, pooja things and idols that were enshrined and prayed by the ancestors of Galiyar clan. The things that were in the pooja room include- a big saree, enshrined to their clan Deity over five generations, a Thangaraippetti, a Utharani, an Yelumalaiyan statue, two idols of Renukadevi, three Thiruman horns, a tripoid stand sealed with Lord Perumal, nine mud flagons and thirty two thirumanballs. There was an oleander shrub at the entrance of the temple. When Chinnaswamy Naidu showed all the pooja things, all prayed them with joy and piety, considering them the great wealth to their clan.
Later on, Gopalakrishnan, the son of Chinnaswamy Naidu, cleaned the place with devotion, washed the pooja things and applied Thirumanjanam to the idols. Then they kept Kaanikkai at the front entrance, kept pongal, performed pooja and prayed. Shri Akkammadevi took abode on AnuppattiGaliyarKrishnaswamy and predicted ”I have been in forest, jungle, Oleander, river banks, air and rain over many generations venturing all sorts of hardships that I underwent for my brothers sakewhom have taken a lot of efforts to build a temple to me. Right from todaylit lamps both in morning and evening and do poojas to me. On the third Saturday of purattasi month, arrange for a green pandal, keep pongal and perform pooja. If you do so, I will tell the details for building the temple” and vanished.
The First & Foremost Temple
Go to Top
To inform the details to Galiyar clan elders, a meeting was arranged in Ashoka marriage hall, near Ramar temple, Coimbatore on 16th August (Sunday) in 1970.
Based on the committees’ decision, the elders of Galiyar clan erected a green pandal in front of Shri Akkammadevi’spooja room in Thevar’s house on 3rd October – the 3rd Saturday of purattasi month in 1970. After keeping pongal they performed pooja and invoked – Sakthi. When they invoked, AnuppapattiGaliyarKrishnaswamy Naidu was inspired by the clan Deity and briefed about her parents, brothers, sister-in-laws and their tortures that paved the way to attain divine power, how the elders of Galiyar clan performed poojas with full devotion and piety, how they ignored her, the hardships she experienced, their eagerness in building a temple to her and the assurance that she gave to patronize them in building a temple for her. She added that it would be enough if they arrange for a temple festival in Sengalipalayam once in a year in Thai month especially on Thaippoosam, which comes after pongal, as her brothers would be busy in celebrating pongal, the harvest festival. Having blessed them, she explained the history of her heredity, how to build the temple and how to make idols”. Now and then, she took abode of her devotee’s and instructedthe outward appearance of the idols and temple.GaliyarChinnaswamy Naidu continued his temple work delightfully and had constant touch with GaliyarRangaiah Naidu, Krishnaswamy Naidu, V.G.Raja Naidu, Sadagopal Naidu, SengalipalayamJagannatha Naidu, Subbaiah Naidu, Kandhaswamy Naidu, VaiyampalayamNarayanaswamy Naidu, SengalipalayamKalyanaswamy Naidu and the other elders in many villages, went with them to collect donations for the temple. The holy place for temple was donated by Thiru.Ramaswamy Naidu, Thiru.Krishnaswamy Naidu, Thiru.Narayanaswamy Naidu whole heartedly. On 21stAiyppasi in 1970, the Muhoorthakkalwas erected in Subhamuhoorthatime and the temple was completed with the help of the kith and kin of Galiyar clan. On 1stJanuary 1971, the temple function started and continued for 7 days. After continuous poojas, the temple Kumbabishekam was performed successfully on the 7th Day of February 1971.i.e. the 25th day of Tamil Month -Thai.
The Kumbabishekam was followed by Paalatrupoojas and pongal poojas. All the elders of Galiyar clan, their relatives and the devotees assisted in completing the mandapam and the other touch up works.
Array of Idols
Go to TopThe way of construction, the details of idols and their installation, the methods of pooja were predicted by none but, Shri Akkammadevi. The entire life history of Shri Akkammadevi was compiled through her prophecy predicted in various occasions that includes the Kumbabishekam and the measure of one paar breadth, half paar diameter, One paar height & three paars length was built.[One paar is equal to the distance covered when their brothers stretched their hands.] and five Gods were installed in a row. While installing the five Gods, Shri Akkammadevi was kept as a small deity at the centre with utmost protection. On her Right was the God KaliyugavarathanYelumalaiyanSanku–ChakrathariVenkatachalapathi and on her left was the Kammakula Deity and Goddess of One Lakh and one kammakulam people Sri Renuka Devi, who was considered her mother, sister and benefactor. To the right corner was the Nathan of ShriRenukadevi, the greatest saint and an incarnation of Lord Shiva. To the left corner was the Yellaiamman and Kavaldheivam Shri Ellammadevi whose head was changed by DhasavatharamoorthyParasuram. The pooja things enshrined to her were depicted on the wall behind her. The idols worshipped by her ancestors were depicted on the left side wall.
Each and every work pertained with the temple construction was patronized by Shri Akkammadevi through her brothers, relatives and devotees. Thus, the temple work went on well without any blemishes and faults. She never gave any room to any loop holes that would hinder the temple work. In case if there were any faults, she readily pointed out the mistakes and rectified them without giving any room for such faults in future.
Periodical Developments & Valuable Poojas held in the Thirukoil
Go to TopThe front mandapam of the temple was constructed by the Philanthropists of GaliyarThiru.G.SubbaiahNaidu and Thiru.G.KanthasamyNaidu,the natives of Covai – Pappanaickenpalayam. On 29th January 1972, a Marriage hall was constructed in the memory of late. Galiyar Thiru.V.Palaniswamynaidu – Thayammal of Covai by their son and daughters as Kanikkai to Shri Akkammadevi temple.
The grand sons of late.GaliyarSri.Rengammal, the sons of GaliyarRajamma& the late.ThiruVenkitaswamy Naidu,Thiru.V.Gopalakrishnan, Thiru.V.Devarajan&Thiru.V.Soundararajan donated approximately 7 cents of land for digging Theerthakkinaru, making Flower Park and to perform paalatrupoojas.
In 1982, owing to MahasudarsanaHomam, a TheerthakKinaru by name Shri Akkammadevi was dug and Thirumanchanangal were done using the theertham.
The relatives of KankallarThiru.Venugopal donated aUrchava idol of Sri.Renukadevi. The Thirumanchanapoojas and Yahahomams were performed during the MahaSudharsanaHomam held in 1982.
Many innovative works were done during the 1982 MahaSudharsanaHomam with the huge donations of Pappanaickenpalayam Galiyar.Thiru.G.Kandasamy Naidu. At the day dawn of Feruary 22nd Friday in 1985, the day on which Shri Akkammadevi’s parents got married on Friday in Maasi month some years ago, the foundation stone to a marriage hall was laid with the magnanimous donation of the same above mentioned philanthrophist.
Besides, Appanaickenpatti GaliyarThiru. Jagannatha Naidu had contributed his donation to build an overhead tank near the Theerthakkinaru. The devotees of Shri Akkammadevi had volunteered to offer both wealth and service for the innovative works.
Her glory is not only known to Galiyars, but also to the other people. So, they too come and get her blessings. The villagers in and around the temple preferred to hold their family functions at the temple premises. Owing to lack of accommodation, the family members of PappanaickenpalayamGaliyarThiru.G.Kandasamy Naidu built a Marriage hall in the memory of their late father N.Gurusamy Naidu and named it,“GaliyarN.Guruswamy Marriage Hall”. The hall was opened on PrabavaAannduVaikasi 18th.i.e on 01.06.1987, with the celestial marriage of Sri Samathakni Maharishi and Sri RenukaDevi.
Since Sengalipalayam village is too interior from the Thudialur – Idigarai main road, it is not easy for the devotees to locate the place. Hats off to the Engineer Mr.R.Veerasamy who built a “ThoranaVayil” that leads to the temple in the year 1997 with the help of the philanthrophists – SinganallurThiru. K.Balachandran,C.Rangasamy of Thirupur .
Divine powers & gratefulness of Shri Akkammadevi
Go to TopWhile installing the idols, she asked to keep the ant hill soil of Goddess Renuka Devi, who was the powerful Deity of the entire world, at her feet.
She retained her divine power by making the Cow, which was considered her Mother, take the soil from the ant hill with its horn and keep it under her feet with blessings. Actually the Cow was given by her maternal uncle when she was brought up without mother’s milk in her childhood. What a wonder! A divine Cow that fed Shri Akkammadevi, freed itself from the rope with which it was tied, rushed to the ant hill, took soil from the hill with its horn and enshrined it at the feet of Shri Akkammadevi. Those who viewed the sight were struck with wonder and prayed her with veneration.
“Before praying me, offer your prayers to my Brother Thirumal and Sister Renuka devi” saying so she revealed her piety on them.
She stood in between them and offered her prayer by folding her hands. She was much pleased when the pooja flowers and Thirumanchanam water which were offered to them fell on her. She thought that she was blessed by them whenever they are worshipped. She performed, Mahasudharsana Homam to her brother Sakrapani who attained bounteous power in 1982, Thai Thingal.
She made arrangements to celebrate the Third Saturday of the Tamil Month Purattasi which was the favourite day of Sriman Narayanan through her brothers. Lord Srinivasan, the God of Thirumalai, is having his bath with the holy water of Akasha Gangai. She fetched the holy water from the divine river Ganga, on the Third Saturday of Purattasi month, enshrined it, got blessings from the divine couples Srinivasan and Alarmelumangai and used it to bathe her brother Thirumal, Sister Renukadevi and the other Deities who protected the people of her clan and the devotees.
Whenever she went to Thirumala to fetch Akasha Gangai Theertham with her brothers, she had given Annathanam like her ancestors and sought repentance for the sins caused by the people of her clan. Besides, she had recalled all the events of Thirumalai in her life history, took her brothers to Thirumalai made them shed joyful tears forgetting themselves. Ultimately she made them ripe all the merits of their life.
To commemorate the glories of Goddess Renuka devi, who patronized her like a sister and mother and redeemed her father Thirupathi Naidu who remained unconscious for seven years, she is doing Putta pooja to her on the day of Thai poosam every year in such a way that it surpassed all the other celebrations in history. She identified the mother Renuka’s Puttru in her temple prakaram itself with her immense blessings.
She performs paalattru poojas once in twelve years righteously and methodically. Bestowed with her blessings, she grants all the welfares to all the Galiyars and devotees.
Logamatha Thirumahal’s sister,Athiparasakthi Renuka’s Anbu nayahan, Sivabrahmam, the saint of all saints, Dasavathara moorthi Parasuraman’s father, Sadaiyongu muni Samathagni Maharishi has dwelt in Thiruvanna malai which is the prime kshethiram of Pancha pootha kshethras.Every year on the day of Karthikai Deepam, Jothi Thiruvizha is celebrated to please him. Likewise she has been celebrating the Karthikai Jothi Thiruvizha in her temple and got his blessings.
Since, she was born to the Kaval Theivam-Ellamma, she celebrates her birthday – the day in Aani month with Anusha natchithiram, to honour and please her. The seven Deities Kannimars rescued Shri Akkammadevi when she jumped into the river to end her life, and then they patronized her by providing accommodation and the pooja offerings as food, when she was loitering in the rain and wind since the Galiyars forgot to worship her. To thank them for their kindness, she opened the Thevar house on Aadi 18th, which is meant to commemorate them.Third August and Aadi 18th in the year 1975 was a Sunday . She made idols to them through her brothers and installed them in her temple with all the righteous ceremonies and poojas. She is celebrating Aadi 18th as a thanks giving day in her temple.
She built a temple to Lord Vinayaka whom she worshipped daily through her brothers. When Mahasudharsana Homam was going on in Thai 1982, she made arrangements for Kalasasthapanam to Sidhi Vinayakar temple, arranged Kumbabhishekam and invoked Sidhi Vinayakar for patronage . Henceforth she ordered that the other poojas and prayers should be performed only after praying Sidhi Vinayaka.
Renovation
Go to TopSince the temple was constructed in 1992, the roof of the “Mahamandapam” got damaged, started leaking and collapsed. To avoid the unnecessary expenditure, the committee had decided to demolish the Mandapam and build an “ArthaMandapam” and a “Mahamandapam” in bigger size with needful changes.
To execute their plan, some eminent and experienced astrologers were called on to foresee and predict their future plan by adopting a method called “prasannam”. As per the deity’s order and wish, they were granted permission to build a “Garpagraham” with “Gopuram”, “ArthaMandapam”and “Mahamandapam”.
The executive committee members were informed the foresight and the predictions in the meeting which was held on 09.01.2005 and then decided to start the temple work.
A general body meeting was arranged in the temple premises on 24.01.2005 – Monday and decided to have “Palalayamahasamprokshanam” [“Ilankovilmahakumbabishekam”] on “TharanavarusamMasi month 19th – a Thursday, when the hour hand glided from 5 A.M.to 6 A.M. Under the dynamic leadership of the trustees and committee members, various poojas like Daily poojas, Full moon day pooja, Special poojas and Thai pongal poojas,(which is the prime pooja of the temple) were performed perfectly.
On 22nd June 2003, a wise decision was taken to transfer the entire Bank Account including the immovable assets to “Galiyar clan welfare fund” from “Shri AkkammadeviThirukovil account”. The main idea behind this transaction is that all the Accounts and assets should be under the custody of Galiyar.
The trustees dedicated themselves to look after the entire temple works, all the poojas, the income and expenditure of the temple, the other conservation and innovative works with full vigor, enthusiasm and piety ignoring their personal works.
Their selfless service continues without any interference and hurdles with the immense blessings of Goddess Shri Akkammadevi
The uninterrupted temple works prove the immense blessings and power of Goddess Shri Akkammadevi, right from the inception of the temple. The Galiyar offered their kind service besides financial support. Hence the work was completed successfully on time.
Believe it or not – the temple Garpagraham, the minute architecture in stone stupas, the elegant view of the spacious mandapam bewitched the people of other clans and the nobles. It is all because of her grace only.
In order to remind her ancestor’s Annathanam to the entire world, she made arrangements for Annathanam on festival days to all the devotees, the poor and to the needy through her brothers.
Having assured to patronize the devotees who would pray by standing on her 3 feet dais with firm belief and true piety, she is relieving them from their hardships.
The number of pilgrims to worship her is kept on increasing. Though she is the deity of Galiyar to shower her blessings on them, she blesses the kith and kin and the others as if she were a rare sea of mercy.
On 3rd July, 2011 it was decided to issue Cash Awards to motivate the top three SSLC and HSC students belonging to Galiyar clan.
With immense blessings of Goddess Shri Akkamma Devi, the Management had put in to effect on Thaipoosam festival on 07.02.2012.
